Frequent Questions
What is a Nutritionist?
A Nutritionist is a professional trained in natural nutrition and complementary therapies. Their primary role is to educate individuals and groups about the benefits of optimal nutrition and how it impacts overall health. Nutritionists recognize the connection between body, mind, and spirit, and understand that mental and physical well-being are closely linked.
An Nutritionist works to uncover the underlying causes of imbalance and supports clients through a detailed, personalized approach. This includes an in-depth assessment of current health status, symptoms, and lifestyle habits. From this information, a comprehensive, individualized nutrition and lifestyle plan is created to guide the client toward optimized health.
What made you want to become a nutritionist?
I first learned about holistic nutrition about 25 years ago when I came across the Canadian School of Natural Nutrition in Toronto. At the time, I was at a crossroads and had two options: join the public service or go back to school. I chose public service and never regretted it, but I would often find myself revisiting the brochure and wondering, “What if…?”
It took nearly two decades, but I eventually realized I could pursue both paths.
Nutrition has always been a part of my life. I grew up in a home where meals were made from scratch, and Sunday nights were reserved for family dinners. The smell of freshly baked bread or a pot roast instantly brings back those happy memories. It makes sense that I would be drawn to a holistic approach as an adult.
I’ve always loved wholesome, nourishing food—so much so that I may be the only person who truly craves broccoli!
How has this role impacted your life?
Over time, my health changed—like it does for many people—and I began to feel that mainstream medicine alone wasn’t enough. I often used a holistic approach alongside conventional care, but I became frustrated by the amount of conflicting information out there. Google was overwhelming, and I was disappointed to learn that many “wellness experts” promote products regardless of accuracy.
That’s when I decided to take matters into my own hands and learn this properly.
After holding onto that brochure for 20 years, I finally enrolled in the Canadian School of Natural Nutrition’s full-time evening program. I learned how nutrition can influence disease and how to design personalized nutrition and lifestyle plans that support optimal health. Applying this knowledge to my own life has been incredibly empowering.
If you could only provide one tip to people, what would it be?
Small changes over time—rather than all at once—can have a dramatic impact on your health.
I’ve seen people become more energized and vibrant simply by improving their diet and making a few lifestyle adjustments. Wellness is not a race. Take your time, and you’ll get there.
